FAQs

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump is a common type of HVAC system located in households. However, In contrast to conventional HVAC systems, a heat pump is able to both heat and cool the interior of a home. So, how exactly does a heat pump work? Well, during the wintertime, when temperatures in the area are cooler, a heat pump will remove and transmit heat energy from the surrounding exterior environment and pump it into your home to increase your interior comfort. A heat pump, on the other hand, collects heat from the inside of your household and transfers it outdoors during the summertime when temperatures are increased. Because of their dual functions, heat pumps are a popular choice for homeowners to install in their homes.

Are you considering a heat pump for your home? If the answer is yes, the team at Boonstra Heating and Air Conditioning is here to help! Are heat pumps the same as air conditioners?

Heat pumps and air conditioners are comparable in that they can both be used to control the temperature inside a home, but they work very differently in order to do so. An air conditioner is a cooling system that transfers heat from the inside of a building to the outside while keeping the inside cool. Air conditioners are generally used in hot climates and only perform in cooling modes.

In contrast, a heat pump depending on the mode it is set to, can both heat and cool a home. During the heating mode, a heat pump absorbs heat from the exterior air or soil and transfers it inside. The method is reversed when it has been set to its cooling mode, with the heat pump removing heat from within a home before releasing it outdoors. Heat pumps are frequently more energy-efficient and cost-effective than completely separate air conditioning systems and heating units because they can provide both heating and cooling throughout the year for complete home comfort regardless of what the weather is like outside.

How do I know if my heat pump is broken?

Signs that your home’s heat pump is not functioning correctly include the following:

  • If your heat pump is not producing any heat or cool air, it could be due to a faulty compressor, a blown fuse, or a refrigerant leak.
  • If your heat pump isn’t delivering sufficient heat or cool air, it might be attributable to blocked-up air filters, low coolant levels, or a broken thermostat.
  • Unexplained noises from your heat pump, including hissing, grinding, or buzzing, may signal a problem with the fan or the refrigerant system.
  • If the thermostat is not working properly, the heat pump may not work at all or may not function properly.
  • If the heat pump frequently turns on and off, it could be due to a faulty thermostat, a dirty air filter, or a refrigerant leak.

Do any of these signs sound familiar? If the answer is yes, then we suggest homeowners reach out to the team at Boonstra Heating and Air Conditioning as soon as possible to prevent further damage to their unit. Boonstra Heating and Air Conditioning are ready to assist you! Why is my heat pump smelly?

A heat pump may emit a foul odour for a variety of reasons, including:

  • If your heat pump’s air filters haven’t been changed in a while, they can become blocked up with dirt, dust, and other debris. This can result in the release of a musty or mouldy odour into the air.
  • If moisture accumulates inside the heat pump, it can provide a breeding ground for mould and bacteria. This can give off a musty or damp odour.
  • If your heat pump is leaking refrigerant, it can emit a strong chemical odour that is hazardous to inhale.
  • If your heat pump has an electrical problem, it may emit a burning odour.

Is your home’s heat pump smelly? If so, we suggest reaching out to the team at Boonstra Heating and Air Conditioning in Burlington, Ontario, for assistance! We’ll have one of our certified HVAC technicians come to your home and repair the issue promptly so you can get back to enjoying the comforts of your home in no time!
